There are many reasons that women want to get a breast augmentation. Some are unhappy with their small breasts, some are looking to restore their breasts after childbirth, and some are looking to make their breasts the same size. This condition, known as breast asymmetry, is actually fairly common among women. In fact, one study found that almost 90 percent of women have naturally asymmetrical breasts.
Breasts develop during puberty and sometimes they develop at different rates, which can cause one breast to be one or more cup sizes smaller than the other in adulthood. Breast surgery can restore symmetry to your breasts while also making them aesthetically pleasing.
What Causes Breasts to Be Asymmetrical?
No one is really sure of a specific cause for breast asymmetry, but it’s thought that hormone production is a cause. Traumatic injuries to the breast tissue could also be another source, which can occur in young prepubescent girls before they start developing. Sometimes, the cause can be something more serious, such as precancerous tumors or benign fibrous growths in the breast tissue.
How Can Breast Surgery Help?
Each patient will have different needs depending on their health and the level of asymmetry. For some patients, a simple Breast Augmentation using an implant in the smaller breast will be enough to restore symmetry. If a patient would prefer to avoid using implants, a Breast Reduction can make the larger breast smaller, and a Breast Lift can tighten, raise and reshape the breasts.
Most patients require a combination of breast surgeries to ensure that their breasts look symmetrical, feel natural, and are able to stay that way. This may involve using a breast lift, augmentation, and/or reduction. If one breast is more than one cup size larger than the other, a full breast lift on the larger side and a smaller lift on the other side may be enough to make the two sides equal. It may be that breast reduction on the larger breast and an implant on the smaller breast will be the best choice. For severe cases of asymmetry, all three types of breast surgery may need to be utilized to some extent to obtain the best results for the patient.
