Breast Augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States, with close to 300,000 performed last year alone. One reason for the steady increase in Breast Enhancement are the highly refined techniques and materials available today. Breast Implants look and feel more natural than ever. Gentle and precise techniques require a shorter healing time, and produce predictably excellent results.
Reasons to Choose Breast Augmentation:
The decision for a Breast Augmentation is extremely personal and can vary greatly from woman to woman. The most common motivator is the desire to have breasts that are proportionate to body shape and size. Some other common reasons include:
- Desire for greater breast upper pole fullness
- Freedom from padding and overly structured bras
- An aesthetic balance of the chest with other physical features
- Correcting the common problem of one breast being smaller than the other
- Restoring size, firmness, and shape lost during childbirth and breastfeeding
- Replenishing the drooping, soft breasts that result from weight gain and loss
Breast Implant Options:
Today, a seemingly unlimited combination of breast implant choices are available, making each procedure highly customizable. Implants are sized by volume (cc’s); there are hundreds of sizes which can be chosen to correct asymmetry of the chest. Other choices include smooth or textured implants, as well as a variety of implant profiles – or the amount of projection they provide. The primary choice for women though, is Saline versus Silicone; the best option will depend on the needs and expectations of each individual. Doctor Basile will help you wade through these decisions clearly and confidently, at the time of your consultation.
Saline Implants rose in popularity during the during the 1990s, and still share the market with Silicone implants. Saline Implants are inserted as an empty Silicone-rubber shell. The surgeon fills them with a salt-water solution after insertion; a process which provides a greater variability in size, and requires therefore a slightly smaller incision.
Though the results from breast augmentation depend on the patient’s anatomy as much as the implant used, the results from Saline Implants are generally fuller, firmer breasts. The feel of the saline implants is bouncier, sassier, and the implant is more easily detected by feel. They also do have a higher tendency to ripple than Silicone Implants. Saline Implants are also less expensive than Silicone Implants.
Silicone Implants were temporarily pulled from the market in the 1990s, but have since been proven safe. After returning in 2004, Silicone Implants are a popular choice for breast enlargement. Silicone Implants are pre-filled and sealed with the optimal amount of silicone gel.
The results seen with Silicone Implants are, generally considered more natural looking and feeling breasts. They also come in a variety of shapes and sizes allowing for customization of results.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure:
A Breast Augmentation is performed under anesthesia and takes about one hour to complete. There are three possible entry locations that Dr. Basile will use for an augmentation: around the areola (periareola), in the armpit (axillary), or in the crease beneath the breast (inframammary). Which location is used will depend on the implant type, surgical goals, and each individual woman’s anatomy. The scars heal so well, that the location ends up being irrelevant. Doctor Basile will take you through the decison making at the time of your consultation. The implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle (submuscular) or directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular). Again the pros and cons, as specifically pertaining to you, will be discussed during your visit.
Other procedures, such as a Breast Lift, may be performed at this time, as well.
The Recovery from Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation is an outpatient procedure. There is generally very little discomfort after surgery, and Doctor Basile will prescribe the appropriate medications to keep you resting comfortably at home. Recovery takes approximately one week, some bruising and swelling can be expected after a Breast Augmentation, which will dissipate over the course of two to six weeks.
The downtime you can expect, as it pertains to your body, your surgery, and your postoperative lifestyle will be discussed in detail at the time of your consultation so you can properly prepare for your procedure.
