A Breast Reduction is procedure designed to reduce the heaviness that accompanies a large chest; as well as reduce sagging and bring the breasts up to a higher position on the body.
In an effort to lighten the weight carried by the woman’s torso, and to decrease the bulging size of the chest, a Breast Reduction is usually performed for more than simple cosmetic reasons.
Large breasts can cause a variety of problems including back pain, shoulder pain, and breathing difficulties. Exercise and certain work activities can be both painful and awkward. There is also a mental strain from unwanted, negative attention; the difficulty in finding appropriate clothing and swimwear; and even unexpected problems such as uncomfortable seatbelts. Self-esteem can be significantly affected by large breasts; women may begin to avoid any situation that may bring added attention to her oversized chest, or extra fatigue.
Dr. Basile believes that women who choose a breast reduction are amongst the most satisfied of all plastic surgery patients. When patients achieve a chest that looks natural and is proportionate to their body frame, more is improved than just their aesthetic look; the change can restore a woman’s poise and self-assurance, and healthier lifestyle.
The Breast Reduction Procedure:
The best candidate for a Breast Reduction is a woman in good health, dealing with weighty, pendulous breasts. At the consultation appointment, Dr. Basile will review the medical history; discuss Breast Reduction options, and the potential outcomes of surgery. He will also explain the risks, scars and recovery period required. The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes about four hours to complete.
Before you know it you will be awake in the recovery room all snugly wrapped up, starting to enjoy the lighter more youthful you!
The Recovery from a Breast Reduction:
After surgery, there is some aching in the breasts; Dr. Basile will prescribe the appropriate medications to keep patients resting comfortably at home. Generally, the initial recovery period after a Breast Reduction will last from about 7-10 days. A support garment or specialized bra may be worn to assist in healing. Patients normally feel well enough to return to work in a week after their surgery. All exercise and strenuous activities can be resumed after the first six weeks of healing.
